Duplicate a portion or an entire layer in Photoshop

Learn how to quickly copy or cut portions of a layer or an entire layer within Photoshop. Both the menu commands and keyboard shortcuts are demonstrated. Also learn how the background layer functions differently to regular layers when following these methods.

NEW LAYER VIA COPY

  • Command/Control + J
    Duplicate a layer.
  • Selection + Command/Control + J
Duplicate the portion of the selected layer that is contained within the selection.

NEW LAYER VIA CUT

  • Selection + Command/Control + Shift + J
Cut the portion of the selected layer that is contained within the selection and move it to a new layer. If the selected layer is a background layer, the selected area will be filled with the background colour. To avoid filling the selected area, turn the background layer into a regular layer by clicking on the padlock icon.
